Stainless steel grades that contain more than 12% chromium in the alloy are resistant to the effects of oxidation. In the case of super duplex grade 2507, the inclusion of 25% chromium in its alloy improves the oxidation resistance even at elevated temperatures. Both austenite and ferrite co-exist in the microstructure of this alloy. Therefore, the Super Duplex Flanges exhibits characteristics similar to both these stainless steel classes. In applications that are exposed to chlorine solutions, these components are known to deliver an excellent performance.
It is usual for conventional austenitic alloys that are exposed to such solutions to crack under pressure caused by the deposition of chlorine ions on the walls of the flanges. Since the ASTM A182 F51 Pipe Flange contains both austenite and ferrite in an equal proportion, they exhibit excellent resistance to SCC. The austenite part of this alloy is the reason for the A182 Super Duplex Flange being able to resist corrosion in the form of pitting, crevice corrosion as well as general corrosion. Typically organic acids such as acetic acid and formic acid cause uniform corrosion in many steel alloys. The inclusion of molybdenum with a high content of chromium makes the UNS S32750 Weld Neck Flange resistant to corrosion in environments that contain such acids. Because the alloy exhibits excellent resistance to dilute Hydrochloric acid, the Super Duplex 2507 Flanges could be used in the chemical processing industry. Another common issue with steel alloys is that they have a tendency to get corroded during welding. When an alloy is welded, the temperature is high, at which stage, the excess carbon atoms get precipitated to form carbide precipitates. This in turn sensitizes the grain boundary, weakening and corroding it. The benefit of welding the Alloy 2507 Blind Flange is that the chemical composition in their alloy contains a very low content of carbon. This makes it difficult for the formation of carbide precipitates and inadvertently prevents intergranular corrosion.
