There are several grades of carbon steel alloys available in the market today. The uses of each alloy would be specific to the application it is required to cater to. High hardness is a property of these alloys which makes them suited to structural applications. Most carbon steel fasteners manufacturers recommend using these alloys because they are very economical, yet prove to be tough. They have an attractive characteristic of being well balanced ductile, yet non-brittle material. Conventionally, alloys with a higher content of carbon tend to be brittle because they are heat treated.
Cost effective, most carbon steel hex nuts are much easier to produce and are easily found across markets. With only carbon and iron in its alloy, the cost of these fasteners is minimal. Elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, etc, are more expensive, which is why alloyed steels are higher in cost as compared to a CS Hex Bolt. And even though there are only two elements in this steel, it is possible to change the content of carbon to achieve different grades that exhibit varying behavior. For instance, a carbon content reduced to 0.3%, results in the chemistry of low carbon steel. low carbon steel fasteners are generally acceptable across many basic applications. However, if an application demands higher tensile strength properties, the increase in carbon content can yield better strength. Often high carbon steel nuts and bolts are used for applications that require resistance to wear. By increasing carbon in their chemical composition, the surface tends to become harder, since more carbon equals higher hardness. They act as reinforcements in structural applications as well. The ductility of this material is in the moderate range, and hence, it is easier to produce threads of a higher quality on the carbon steel threaded rod.
