Components in applications that are involved in transmission services (High pressure) are produced using specification ASTM A694. High pressure applications cause a lot of stress or load on the component, especially during the conveyance or the flow of media across systems. Hence the materials used in the manufacture of ASTM A694 Flange must be from either carbon steel or alloy steel.
Cheaper of the two, carbon steels have a tensile strength that ranges between high to moderate, with high hardness, making them ideal for high pressure applications. They are durable, albeit lack corrosion resistance properties, which they make up for with their strength and economical cost. There are different grades available in the ASTM A694 carbon steel flange, most common of which are F52, F60 & F42. These components are also referred to as high yield carbon steel. Hence, these flanges will match steel pipes in grades such as API 5L X42, X52, X60, as well as X65.
