Both grade 8 and 8m are austenitic stainless steel alloys that are suited to work in environments with elevated temperatures. Considered to be an economical choice, grade 8, is also known as alloy 304 is stainless steel with moderate tensile properties. And even though it can be used in applications exposed to high temperatures, its performance does not suffice those environments that require good corrosion resistance properties.
One of the best features of the ASTM A193 B8m Cl 2 Nut is that the alloy is resistant to the effects of marine water, where the salinity in the sea can be as high as 3.5%. The oxidation resistance of grade B8m is significantly better than grade B8. Since the material contains molybdenum, the A193 Grade B8m Cl 2 Studs has better creep strength along with better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Grade B8 is also referred to as 18/8, which is the indication of chromium and nickel in the alloy of ASTM A193 Grade B8 Class 2 Bolts. The high content of nickel in the alloy of both grades permits them to be used at high temperatures. This being said, it is important to note that the rate of oxidation accelerates when the alloys are exposed to higher temperatures, yet, out of the two, Sa193 B8 Cl2 Hex Bolts would decay much faster in comparison to grade B8M. Moreover, in chlorine containing environments, it is a much safer choice to use grade 316 because they offer much better resistance to chlorine stress related cracking. Though, the ideal material for applications that requires a more economical approach would be ASTM A193 B8 Class 2 Fasteners. This specification covers 2 tensile classes. While both class 1 and class 2 are treated by a carbide solution, class 2 is also strain hardened. There are two benefits to strain hardening austenitic stainless steel alloys. One, the strain hardened fastener can carry a higher load in a lesser contact area. And 2, the resistance to deformation of the SA193 B8m Cl 2 Studs sees an increase.
