Specification API 17D is used in the manufacture of flanges intended for subsea applications. This means the production unit of the wells is located on a seabed. Hence, the alloy used in this specification needs to be able to withstand currents and exhibit some level of corrosion resistance. Generally, alloys like carbon steel or stainless steel grades are used in the construction of these flanges. Stainless steel is preferred n the production of an API 17D SS Flange because of its superior resistance to corrosion and higher mechanical characteristics.
API 17D is a specification that is a part of ISO standard 13628. This standard details the several parameters for the API 17D Flange including the design, tooling necessary, testing and quality control, storing, as well as shipping of the entire subsea piping system. Subsea applications may require an assembly that needs higher tensile properties, especially high toughness because the environment applies high pressure to the piping system, which in turn is stressful. The Api 17d Carbon Steel Swivel Flange is more suited to those applications that need high pressure and increased tensile strength. The equipment in Subsea applications is not new to stress, as they are subjected to surface tension on a daily basis. Surface tension acts as an opposing force, to the internal force in the piping system. Shutting these systems is a task. This is why the use of stainless steel Api 17d Blind Flange helps to reduce the stress caused in the system with its high mechanical strength. In the case of an Api 17d Swivel Flange, the component is required to be connected to a piping system via welding. Therefore, it is necessary that the material’s weldability should range from good to excellent. Although the weldability of carbon steel is lower than stainless steel, the ISO 13628-4 Swivel Flange produced in carbon steel tends to be more cost effective.
